While acknowledging that any of the top six sides could secure promotion, former Motsepe Foundation Championship-winning coach Brandon Truter has singled out three teams he believes are the frontrunners.

The race for promotion to the Betway Premiership is heating up, with most clubs left with 11 matches. Milford FC currently lead the race with 36 points from 19 matches, followed by Kruger United with the same points.

The top six consist of Milford, Kruger, Casric Stars, Cape Town City FC, Hungry Lions and Upington City FC. Truter, who won promotion with Moroka Swallows in 2020, says Casric Stars, Cape Town City and Milford are his picks so far.

“Look, I think Casric, they have been there in the [PSL Relegation/Promotional] playoffs. I think they have the pedigree, and I think Bucs [Mthombeni] has also grown from them, and he knows what to do and what is needed to achieve this, you understand,” Truter told FARPost.

“But then you look at Cape Town City as well. I think they are the in-form team at the moment. They also have lots of experienced players who can get them over the line, and that is key for them at the moment. I also think Cape Town City are throwing their financial muscles around, so promotion is their aim.

“Milford as well. They have been having a good run, but I am not sure. There are just too many variables at Milford,โ€ he added.ย โ€œI think at one stage they were close to the playoffs some few seasons ago, they were also close to relegation, and now they find themselves in the playoff spot.

“But you never know, football is very unpredictable. It doesn’t always go according to plan, and I have been there and seen it.

โ€œSo it’s a promotional league, and that’s what everybody is chasing, and that’s what makes it interesting to watch and observe. That’s what stands out to me. From the top six, anything is still possible, but with the 11 games, that’s 33 points still to play for, and a lot of things can still happen.”
