Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has made himself open to the possibility of entertaining Kaizer Chiefs should they opt to engage him for a coaching role at Naturena.
However, the 48-year-old is currently the head coach of the Kenya national team, with the mandate of leading them at the 2027 AFCON tournament. Kenya will co-host the next AFCON finals with East African neighbours Uganda and Tanzania.
That leaves McCarthy with a huge task to guide the Harambee Stars to at least a commendable outing in a tournament they are partly organising. The former FC Porto and Orlando Pirates striker has, however, made remarks that could entice Chiefs to buy him out of his Kenya contract.
The Soweto giants are currently struggling, with a huge amount to blame apportioned to their co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze. Four straight defeats in the CAF Confederation Cup and Betway Premiership define the current state of affairs at Chiefs.
Seated in fifth position in the league, there are already fears they could end the season out of the top eight, like the last two terms. It appears Amakhosi could have a new coach next season, and they might have already begun the hunt for the new man to be at the helm.

“That’s football [3-0 Soweto Derby loss to Orlando Pirates], in football things happen. I can understand their frustrations because derby day is massive and important, and I think they didn’t cover themselves in glory after the weekend,” said McCarthy on Marawa Sports Worldwide.
“But they are a good team, very good players. If nobody came knocking on my door, that means that they are happy. You are happy with what you have because if you come and knock on someone’s door, you approach them [it means you are interested].
“There is a lot of ‘what ifs.’ They don’t exist to me because I have been in plenty of situations, even with Orlando Pirates. Very close to managing Pirates after my playing career and then nothing materialised.
“So, ‘what ifs,’ no. If they want, they know where I am, they know where to find me, how to contact me, to make it happen. But if not, it’s just the rumours.”
