Motaung Jr addresses future as Chiefs sporting director

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has responded to a question about whether he would consider stepping down amid the club’s ongoing challenges.

The Soweto giants have been experiencing an unfortunate streak, suffering four consecutive defeats across all competitions. Recently, they faced a disappointing 1-0 loss to Richards Bay FC in the Betway Premiership, which derailed their ambitions of contesting for the league title.

Before the defeat against Richards Bay, Amakhosi lost to arch-rivals Orlando Pirates, Stellenbosch FC, and Zamalek SC, crashing out of the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.

The Glamour Boys have struggled to produce positive results in the second round of the 2025/26 season under the guidance of co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.

The coaching duo took over the hot seat at Chiefs after the club parted ways with head coach Nasreddine Nabi in September 2025. Kaze and Ben Youssef have been entrusted with the big role of leading Chiefs for the remainder of the campaign, and as it stands, they could finish the season without any piece of silverware after losing out on all domestic cups, while the league is seemingly a two-horse race between Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

In the aftermath of the recent results, fans have been calling for the sacking of the coaches, questioning their credentials to lead a club of Chiefs calibre. Meanwhile, some supporters have directed their frustrations at Motaung Jr on social media, questioning his leadership skills.

Motaung Jr took over the sporting director role in July 2021, with a mission to turn the club into one of the continent’s most competitive sides. However, the Soweto giants have fallen behind their rivals in terms of trophy wins and the quality of players they recruit.

While Chiefs ended their decade-long trophy drought with a Nedbank Cup triumph last season under the leadership of Motaung Jr, he has continued to face criticism from the fans.

Speaking with Robert Marawa on 947, Motaung Jr has revealed that he also has strict mandates to meet, and heโ€™ll hold himself accountable if he falls short in his role.

โ€œLast year, we ended the 10-year trophy drought, and it took three years to be able to change the club’s fortunes. I firmly believe that if we work as a collective, there is so much more that we can achieve,โ€ Motaung Jr said.

โ€œWe also have goals and targets, but I’m also here to work and serve. If I don’t achieve the goals like anyone else, I’ll be the first person to put my hand up. We are here to serve; everyone has deliverables and KPIs that we have to achieve. I’m fully focused there, and I think everyone that is associated with the club is fully focused.โ€
