Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Andile Jali has reflected on how he spent his first ‘big’ paycheck. Jali, who will be 36 next month, made his professional football debut while at Pretoria University.
Before his notable stints with Orlando Pirates, KV Oostende in Belgium, and Mamelodi Sundowns, Jali enjoyed a fairytale run with AmaTuks. Under the guidance of Steve Barker, AmaTuks reached the Nedbank Cup final while competing in the lower division.
The most significant highlight of that campaign was a quarterfinal victory over Kaizer Chiefs, which put Jali on the radar of the country’s top clubs.
The dream run ended in a narrow 1–0 defeat to the now-defunct Moroka Swallows in the final. However, for Jali, the silver medal was followed by a career-defining move to Orlando Pirates.
WHAT DID JALI DO WITH HIS R25000 PAYCHECK?

The Matatiele-born star, now involved in farming, also recalls the financial reward from the cup run, a R25,000 bonus that felt life-changing at the time. “Those memories will live forever,” Jali told City Press. “I took the money home. I spent it, saying, “I never had this money before.” So, I enjoyed it as if it were my last money in life. I slaughtered a beast and brewed traditional beer, as I always do when I go home.”
Jali, who has hung up his boots, said he had long prepared himself mentally for life after football.
“Some people don’t want to leave football because they have regrets. When I went to Swallows from Sundowns, I told myself, ‘This is my last season’ because I wanted to take my kids to school, to wake up in the morning and bring them back home in the afternoon.”
With several traditional heavyweights already eliminated from the Nedbank Cup, Jali, who won the Nedbank Cup with Sundowns in 2022, believes the remaining teams now have a rare chance to make history.
Motsepe Foundation Championship teams Milford FC and Casric Stars, along with TS Galaxy and Durban City FC, made the semi-finals.
“That’s where you’ll see the real character of the so-called small teams. Now that those are out, it’s our time for them to watch us. This is the opportunity they must use because everyone wants to play for the big three in South Africa.”
