Two key Chiefs stars ruled out of Durban City tie

Kaizer Chiefs XI against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs will be without two key players when they host Durban City FC in a Betway Premiership encounter this weekend, as they look to snap a dismal four-match winless run in all competitions.

The Soweto giants are scheduled to go head-to-head with the KZN-based outfit on Sunday, 15 March, at the FNB Stadium, with kick-off set for 15:30.

Amakhosi enter the tie under immense pressure to arrest a mid-season slump that has seen their ambitions falter. They have endured a bruising run of form, with three consecutive league defeats severely denting their hopes of securing a top-three finish and a return to CAF inter-club competition football.

The Glamour Boys’ recent league setbacks include a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Stellenbosch FC, followed by a heavy 3-0 loss to arch-rivals Orlando Pirates, and a 1-0 loss to Richards Bay FC.

As it stands, Chiefs occupy sixth place on the log with 30 points from 18 matches. Meanwhile, Durban City sit in fourth position, having collected 32 points from 20 games played.

WHO ARE THE CHIEFS PLAYERS RULED OUT OF DURBAN CITY GAME?

Chiefs will battle it out with Durban City without their defender Aden McCarthy and midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa due to suspension.

Kaizer Chiefs will be without the defensive duo of Aden McCarthy and Sibongiseni Mthethwa for their upcoming fixture. Both players are set to serve a one-match ban after picking up their fourth yellow cards during Amakhosiโ€™s sold-out clash against Richards Bay FC at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex last Tuesday.

While the loss of the two players thins out the selection options, there is a silver lining for the Glamour Boys. Experienced defender Zitha Kwinika is available for selection again after serving his own one-match suspension.

Kwinika’s return came at the right time for the Glamour Boys. This is because the medical department continues to work overtime with several key defenders. The likes of Nkanyiso Shinga, Inacio Miguel, Given Msimango, and Rushwin Dortley are all out nursing their respective injuries.

KAIZER CHIEFS’ OFFICIAL STATEMENT

“Kaizer Chiefs will be without Aden McCarthy and Sibongiseni Mthethwa. Both suspended after picking up their fourth cautions in the previous match. On a positive note, defender Zitha Kwinika returns to the squad. This comes after serving his one-match suspension, giving the technical team a welcome boost in defence,” reads the club’s statement.

“Several injuries continue to limit options, but the squad has enough depth and remains focused on delivering a strong performance.”
