‘Siwelele had Jesus Christ in the posts’ — Ouaddou on Ricardo Goss heroics

In the Christian faith, Jesus Christ is revered as the saviour of mankind. On Saturday afternoon at the Orlando Amstel Arena, Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou felt his side had come up against a similar “miraculous” force in the form of Ricardo Goss.

Just as a saviour stands between humanity and their fate, Goss stood between the Buccaneers and the back of the net, producing a performance so defiant that Ouaddou could only describe it in divine terms.

To put the ‘Jesus Christ’ performance into perspective: Goss produced a goalkeeping masterclass as Siwelele FC fought to a 1-1 draw against the Soweto giants.

While the Buccaneers lamented dropping two crucial points in the Betway Premiership title race, the Mamelodi Sundowns loanee was busy staging a one-man defiance. Goss racked up a staggering 11 saves, single-handedly preventing 2.36 goals [based on an expected 3.36 xGoT].

Beyond the shot-stopping, Goss acted as the ultimate defensive general. With 61 touches and four clearances, he effectively swept behind his backline, maintaining composure under relentless pressure to ensure his side left Soweto with a point.

As the Buccaneers unleashed a relentless assault on the opposition goal, Goss acted as the ultimate shield, rescuing his team from defeat. His preservation of the point was more than just a stat line; it was a lifeline for Siwelele as they fight to distance themselves from the relegation axe and push for a spot in the top eight.

“First of all, we have to give credit to the goalkeeper; he was the Man of the Match. We didn’t have a goalkeeper today; we had Jesus Christ in the posts today,” said Ouaddou.

“He saved everything, so we have to give him credit. I don’t know if I have to say something to my players; they give everything, shots on target, created chances, but we had a wall in the goals, and I think he saved his team today. He did a fantastic job.”

While Ouaddou conceded that a recurring lack of clinical edge in the final third remains a big concern for Pirates, he maintained that no amount of tactical instruction could have overcome Goss’s inspired form. The Pirates mentor suggested that on such an afternoon, his players were simply up against a force of nature.

“For us, the most difficult thing in the game is to create chances, especially against a team fighting so desperately to preserve their top-flight status,” Ouaddou noted.

A WARNING TO THE REST OF THE LEAGUE BY THE PIRATES COACH

He was quick to warn the rest of the Betway Premiership that Siwelele’s performance wasn’t just a flash in the pan: “I can promise you that there are not many teams that will beat Siwelele if they continue to play the way they did this afternoon. If they maintain that level, they will be a massive problem for anyone.”

Pirates’ dominance was reflected in the staggering statistics as they peppered the opposition goal with 27 shots. Despite the relentless pressure, the breakthrough remained elusive until Tshepang Moremi struck a vital equaliser. Moremi’s effort cancelled out an early opener from a familiar face, as former Pirates winger Vincent Pule returned to haunt his old side, putting Siwelele ahead against the run of play.

Reflecting on the performance, Ouaddou highlighted his side’s statistical superiority, though he lamented the defensive lapse that forced them into a recovery mission.

“In global terms, we dominated the game through possession, chances created, shots on target, and xG [expected goals],” Ouaddou added “Unfortunately, we conceded early, and we were forced to chase the game. I think the boys showed great character by fighting back and finding the equaliser. We gave everything to win the game.”
