Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has shed light on highly-rated winger Kobamelo Kodisang’s struggles for game-time at the club.

Kodisang joined Stellies on loan in the January transfer window from Mamelodi Sundowns for the remainder of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. The talented winger spent the first round of the season at AVS Futebol SAD in the Portuguese top-flight on loan, which was supposed to be a season-long loan; however, the loan spell was cut short after six months.

Kodisang completed a move to AVS Futebol to search for regular playing minutes after a tough stint with Sundowns last season. He arrived at Masandawana at the start of the 2024/25 season from Moreirense FC, where he played his best football. In his two seasons at the club, Kodisang featured in 67 appearances, netted 14 goals, and provided six assists.

Following the impressive run at Moreirense, Kodisang completed a high-profile move to Sundowns; however, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, prompting the club to loan him to AVS Futebol.

At AVS, Kodisang continued to starve for game time after registering 10 matches and scoring one goal. The pacey winger returned to the PSL to join Stellenbosch after struggling to make a good impression in Portugal.

Kodisang has only featured in five matches in all competitions so far, starting only once in the CAF Confederation Cup. He’s yet to open his scoring account at the Winelands-based side.

His coach, Gavin Hunt, addressed the slow start, admitting that Kodisang came to the club not in good physical condition.

“Well, he came to us not in good condition. He’s coming into a pressure situation where you have to defend the lead, so you don’t want to put that pressure on a wide player like him,” Hunt said.

“So we have to be careful, he definitely deserves more time [to adjust]. Where, how, and when I don’t know, but I need to give him a fair chance.”
