Kaizer Chiefs beat Magesi to keep top three hopes alive

Kaizer Chiefs sealed a second-straight Betway Premiership victory after beating struggling Magesi FC 2-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

After an unconvincing first half, the Soweto giants made it difficult for a Magesi comeback late in the second stanza to secure a result that was a follow-up to last weekend’s 1-0 win against Durban City FC. Crucially for Chiefs, they are now in position four after collecting maximum points.

They have a point less than third-placed AmaZulu FC. However, Chiefs could lose fourth spot if Sekhukhune United beat Golden Arrows on Sunday.

Remaining in contention of a top three finish to play continental football next season, Amakhosi now have 14 points fewer than log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and with a game in hand. Magesi are winless in 13 consecutive games in all competitions, and they last tasted victory in October 2025.

Relegation is now real for Dikwena Tsa Meetsi, who anchor the standings with four points less than 15th-placed Orbit College FC.

From the team that started against Durban City six days earlier, Chiefs co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze made three changes. Aden McCarthy, Pule Mmodi and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo came in for Zitha Kwinika, Siphesihle Ndllvu and Ashley du Preez.

Magesi coach Allan Freese started exactly the same team that was held 2-2 by Chippa United last week. But it did not pay off for the veteran tactician as his side struggled to break their hosts.

Chiefs dominated the first half and created some good chances, but did not live up to the promises of opening a healthy lead. On the half-hour mark, Glody Lilepo shot over the bar from inside the box after being set up by Pule Mmodi.

But just minutes after, Wandile Duba beat Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze from an acute angle for his first goal of the season. Orlando Pirates loanee Sifiso Luthuli almost hit back for Magesi in stoppage time of the first half, but his headed effort went just wide.

The introduction of Gaston Sirino for Mduduzi Shabalala in the 61st minute added some firepower in Chiefs’ attack but yielded no goals.

Another substitute Mfundo Vilakazi assured the home side of three points in the 86th minute when he finished, at second attempt, a cross from the right side.
