Cape Town City coach shares thoughts on promotion race

Cape Town City FC head coach Jan Vreman admits that the remaining eight matches will be unpredictable as more than five teams fight for automatic promotion to the SA elite league.

The Citizens are in contention for a return to the Betway Premiership following their relegation at the end of last season. They currently sit fifth in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, three points behind leaders Milford FC.

CT City, Milford FC, and Kruger United are currently leading a high-stakes promotion race, with Hungry Lions and Casric Stars also positioned as firm favourites to challenge for the Motsepe Foundation Championship title—and the coveted automatic ticket to the Betway Premiership.

Upington City FC and the University of Pretoria also still have a mathematical chance to challenge for the championship.

MOTSEPE FOUNDATION CHAMPIONSHIP PROMOTION RACE HEATS UP

CT City played to a 1-1 draw against Venda FC at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday. Speaking after the match, Vreman says the last eight matches are going to be difficult not only for them but also for the rest of the clubs.

“Today [Saturday] and last week against Highbury FC, you also saw Casric against Kruger,” he told journalists.

“Every game is so heavy. It can go to the left or to the right, you never know. If you look at the game against Venda, winning 1-0 was possible. But I guess we’re standing here with one point. It’s eight games more, and every game is like this [difficult] for other teams and for us. But let’s see how it goes.”

Vreman also believes senior players such as Keagan Dolly, Lorenzo Gordinho, Njabulo Ngcobo and Miguel Timm will play a key role in the last few matches.

“They possess a wealth of experience, and their role now is to pass that knowledge down to the younger players. While we provide instructions from the touchline, they are the ones who must take charge and lead on the pitch,” he added.
