Kaizer Chiefs’ defensive crisis deepens ahead of crucial April fixtures

Kaizer Chiefs players before a game

Kaizer Chiefs are facing a defensive headache at a critical stage of the season, with injuries and suspensions threatening to derail their momentum ahead of key April fixtures.

Chiefs have been dealt another blow with vice-captain Zitha Kwinika ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.  The experienced centre-back, who has featured in 25 matches across all competitions this season, missed the recent clash against Magesi FC and has now joined the club’s growing injury list.

Kwinika becomes the second defender sidelined for the rest of the season after Nkanyiso Shinga, worsening the crisis in Chiefs’ backline at a time when consistency is crucial.

The situation is further complicated by the suspension of Miguel Inácio, who will miss the next two matches after accumulating eight yellow cards. This leaves Given Msimango, recently back from injury, as the only natural right centre-back currently available.

Chiefs have already been forced into makeshift solutions in defence. In a recent match against Richards Bay FC, they deployed two left-footed centre-backs – Aden McCarthy and Bradley Cross – due to injuries and suspensions. With limited options, the club may now be forced to look towards its development structures to plug the gaps.

DEFENSIVE ISSUES A CONCERN FOR KAIZER CHIEFS

A similar situation has already unfolded in the goalkeeping department, where the unavailability of both Brandon Petersen and Fiacre Ntwari saw youngster Takalani Mazhamba step in to deputise Bruce Bvuma, while Naphtali Mokoena provided emergency cover, travelling with the team to Durban.

Despite the off-field setbacks, Amakhosi have managed to build momentum in the Betway Premiership. They secured back-to-back victories, including a 2-0 win over Magesi FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Prior to that, Chiefs edged Durban City FC 1-0, with Glody Lilepo netting the decisive goal. The Congolese international continued his fine form against Magesi, providing the assist for Wandile Duba’s opener in the 32nd minute, before substitute Mfundo Vilakazi sealed the victory late on.

Those results have lifted Chiefs into fourth place on the standings, just one point behind AmaZulu FC, with two games still in hand.
However, the defensive instability presents a serious concern as Chiefs prepare for a demanding run of fixtures. They are set to face Orbit College FC on April 6 after the FIFA break. The match has been moved from Rustenburg to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, with the team taking on TS Galaxy FC shortly thereafter.

In April, they also face Magesi FC, Polokwane City FC, Orlando Pirates, and Siwelele FC, bringing their total fixtures for the month to six.
