Current AmaZulu FC midfielder Hendrick Ekstein has explained why he had to go back and apologise to Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung after he left the club in 2019.

Ekstein parted ways with Amakhosi shortly before the conclusion of the 2018/19 season. The club announced the mutual termination of his contract just before their Nedbank Cup final against TS Galaxy.

This came after the two parties could not reach an agreement on the terms of a new deal, even though Ekstein had spent five seasons with the senior team.

He was promoted to the first team for the club’s development side. Ekstein later moved to Azerbaijan to join Sabah FC and also featured for Sabail FK before returning to South Africa to join Usuthu.

The 35-year-old has been enjoying his football at the Betway Premiership outfit, AmaZulu, and is one of the key players for the Arthur Zwane-coached side.

Speaking on the SABC Station Radio 2000 Sport Show, Game On, Ekstein also explained why he felt the need to return to Naturena and apologise to the club.

“To be honest, we didn’t agree with the figures on the contract. I felt that I deserved more because we were on our way to the [Nedbank] final. The one that they played against TS Galaxy and lost 1-0,” he said, referring to his departure.

WHY THE NEED FOR AN APOLOGY TO THE KAIZER CHIEFS CHAIRMAN

โ€œBut to be honest, I don’t want to talk about those matters because after everything, I also went to the [Kaizer Chiefs] Village to apologise to the chairman [Kaizer Motaung],โ€ added Pule Ekstein.

โ€œSo I made peace, and I also think they are at peace. So I am fine, and I also think the team is fine. The way I left the team, I think it was not the right way, according to the way I got the news. So I had to go and apologise.”
