Bafana Bafana and Panama played out to a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the first of two international friendlies at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Friday night.
Despite falling behind to an early Yoel Bรกrcenas strike, Hugo Broosโ men showed great character to level matters through Oswin Appollis shortly after the restart. The stalemate serves as a vital exercise for South Africa as they continue their intensive preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The encounter began as a cagey affair, with both sides struggling to find their rhythm in the opening 20 minutes. South Africa debuted their new kit set to be used at the upcoming FIFA World Cupโscheduled to be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
However, Panamaโs physical presence and disciplined shape made it difficult for the home side to find spaces in the final third.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when Yoel Barcenas found the back of the net, capitalising on a defensive lapse.
Despite the setback, Bafana looked the more likely side to spark a comeback. However, they lacked the finishing touch required to dismantle a resilient Panamanian backline.
PANAMA LEADING BAFANA BAFANA AT HALF-TIME
Panama, currently ranked 33rd in the world, demonstrated tactical maturity by deploying an organised low block. This frustrated South Africaโs creative sparksโOswin Appollis, Themba Zwane, and Tshepang Moremiโwho found little room to operate between the lines before the interval.

The showdown went into the interval with the visitors’ leading the hosts with a 1-0 scoreline.
The momentum shifted in Bafanaโs favour after the restart in the second stanza, as they pushed desperately for an equaliser. While the intensity improved, the clinical edge remained elusive, leaving the home supporters disappointed.
South Africa finally levelled matters in the 48th minute through Orlando Pirates’ Oswin Appollis, thanks to an assist by Khuliso Mudau.
The result marks a promising start to this international window for South Africa, who are set to face Mexico in the World Cup opener in June.
Meanwhile, Bafana will have a quick chance to rectify their errors when the two sides meet again for the second game of this friendly series in Cape Town. This clash will be played at the DHL Stadium on Tuesday, 31 March.
