CAF president Patrice Motsepe says they respect the decision by Senegal to challenge the Confederation’s appeal decision to strip them of their AFCON title.

Senegal were crowned champions of Africa after defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 in a controversial Final earlier this year.

However, that decision was overturned by the CAF’s appeal board, which awarded the title to the hosts.

The Lions of Teranga have now turned to the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS], lodging a formal appeal. Senegal are also one of the nine African countries that have secured automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

CAF PRESIDENT TO VISIT BOTH SENEGAL AND MOROCCO TO OFFER HIS SUPPORT

Addressing the media following a CAF EXCO meeting in Cairo, Egypt, Motsepe says he will soon be visiting Senegal to offer them their support.

“I will be visiting Senegal in the next few weeks to meet with the football leadership in Senegal and meet with the government,” he said.

PATRICE MOTSEPE SAYS THEY ARE COMMITTED TO DEVELOPING FOOTBALL IN THE CONTINENT

“My message is very simple, we are deeply committed to working together and to cooperate and help to develop football in Senegal. But also to emphasise our commitment and our love for the people of Senegal.

“Steps that Senegal has taken to appeal the decision of the CAF appeal board to CAS are something that we don’t only respect, but every country has a duty, whether it’s Senegal or Morocco, Nigeria, Cameroon or any other country.”

“The football leadership have a duty to advance and protect the interests of football in that country. So we will be giving a message to say we are with you and we support you. We are all Africans, and we love the people of Senegal and have a deep partnership with the football leadership. I will then go to Morocco to give the same message.”
