The culpable homicide case against Sekhukhune United player Shaune Mogaila has been postponed following a court appearance on Monday, 30 March.

Mogaila appeared before the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng on charges including culpable homicide and reckless driving.

The charges stem from a vehicle accident that killed a nine-year-old girl, Gomolemo Mavimbela and seriously injured her mother, Keo Mavimbela, in 2024.

A day before the accident, Mogaila had played a league match against Richards Bay FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

The 30-year-old has already made several court appearances and has been out on bail. He has also been playing for his side in both the Betway Premiership and the domestic cup.

His case has now been postponed to 12 May 2026 to allow the defence and state to negotiate a plea proposal. Mogaila’s legal representatives are expected to finalise a plea and sentencing proposal.

Meanwhile, the Mavimbela family has since approached civil rights group AfriForum for legal support. Speaking outside the court on Monday, AfriForum spokesperson Barry Bateman told the media that the Mavimbela family was struggling to cope with the incident, especially when they had to face the accused every time they met him in court.

“It’s a very difficult time for the family. Every time that they come here [in court] for another postponement,” said Bateman.

“It’s another deep breath that they have to take to be here and come face to face with a man who caused an accident that led to the death of their loved one. But we will continue to accompany them on every occasion. They want to see justice.

“So it is so important that a just and appropriate sentence is imposed on a person who is responsible for causing this lifelong scar to this family.”
