Could DDC duo be the answer to Chiefs’ defensive setback?

Kaizer Chiefs' DDC side

Kaizer Chiefs are staring at a defensive setback at the worst possible time, but the answer to their problems may not lie in tactical reshuffles. Instead, it could already be within their own system.

With Zitha Kwinika ruled out for the rest of the season and Miguel Inácio suspended, the spine of Amakhosi’s defence has been severely weakened. Ahead of the Betway Premiership clash against Orbit College FC, Given Msimango is the only natural right-sided centre-back available. Msimango recently returned from a lengthy injury layoff.

In recent matches, Chiefs have already been forced into uncomfortable adjustments, most notably deploying two left-footed centre-backs – Aden McCarthy and Bradley Cross – against Richards Bay FC. While the team has managed to grind out results, the imbalance at the back remains a ticking time bomb ahead of a packed April schedule.

But amid the chaos, an internal solution is emerging. One option available to the technical team is to prepare Thabiso Monyane as a backup in the right centre-back role.

Traditionally a right-back, Monyane possesses attributes that could translate effectively into central defence. He has a strong physical profile, is comfortable in possession, and thrives in one-on-one defensive situations, qualities that are essential for a modern centre-back.

In many ways, this would not be a gamble but a calculated adjustment.

CAN CHIEFS TURN TO THEIR DDC PIPELINE?

However, the boldest solution might be within the club’s development structures. Chiefs’ DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] side has quietly developed promising defensive talent, and the current crisis offers a genuine pathway opportunity.

Two names in particular stand out: Siyabonga Gumede and Daviews Morwasi. Both defenders have impressed at youth level, showing composure, defensive awareness and the hunger to step up. In a season where necessity is forcing change, Chiefs may have little choice but to trust in that next generation.

Gumede was previously called up for the COSAFA team under Molefi Ntseki, showing he is capable of stepping up. Gumede is very technical, strong in one-on-one situations, and good on the ball. Of course, he still has elements to improve in his game, but he could fill a gap.

Morwasi is also on an upward trajectory and could also plug that hole.

The precedent has already been established in the goalkeeping department, where injuries to senior players have paved the way for younger options to gain matchday experience. Takalani Mazhamba has been on the bench, deputising for Bruce Bvuma in the absence of Fiacre Ntwari and Brandon Petersen.

Naphtali Mokoena has been part of the travelling squad to Durban when Chiefs defeated Magesi 2-0. A similar approach in defence could not only solve an immediate problem but also accelerate the club’s long-term rebuilding process.
