Sekhukhune United have opened talks with experienced defender Daniel Cardoso over a possible contract renewal that could keep him at the club beyond the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.

Cardoso has been one of the consistent performers for Sekhukhune and also plays a major role in guiding the youngsters. The former Kaizer Chiefs defender has formed an integral part of the Babina Noko squad under the guidance of head coach Eric Tinkler.

Cardoso has made 23 appearances across all competitions in the heart of defence as Sekhukhune fights for a top-three finish in the league to qualify for the CAF interclub competitions.

The veteran centre-back has been with Sekhukhune since July 2022 after signing with the team on a free transfer after parting ways with Chiefs.

Cardoso spent seven seasons with Amakhosi after signing with the club in 2015 from the now-defunct Free State Stars. After the end of his spell with Chiefs, Cardoso continued to prove his qualities in Sekhukhune colours.

With the 37-year-old seemingly in the plans of Tinkler, FARPost has learnt that the Limpopo-based side is keen on retaining Cardoso for another season.

Cardosoโ€™s existing contract is set to expire in June 2026, having signed a one-year contract extension at the start of the current campaign. While nothing is final yet, a source close to the information has revealed that Sekhukhune has made their intentions clear to keep Cardoso, and the deal could be concluded in the next few weeks should both parties reach a mutual agreement.

Captain Cardoso has been competing with players such as Medupi Thokolo, Bright Ndlovu, Tresor Tshibwabwa, and Tsepo Matsimbi, while the newly signed Rivaldo Coetzee will also be an option at centre-back.
