‘It’s a stepping stone’: Zim coach on Mukuru 4 Nations Cup success

Zimbabwe captain lifts the Mukuru 4 Nations Cup.

Zimbabwe coach Marian Marinica says winning the Mukuru 4 Nations Cup might seem small, but it is a stepping stone for them to catch up with the likes of Bafana Bafana and other giants in Africa.

The Warriors of Zimbabwe beat Zambia 1-0 in the final played on Tuesday evening, to clinch the inaugural Mukuru 4 Nations Cup. The encounter was staged at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown.

Junior Zindoga forced an own goal in the final. Only four nations, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, and Malawi, participated in the tournament.

Zimbabwe was spurred by a number of PSL players, including Zindoga of TS Galaxy, Orlando Pirates’ Daniel Msendami, Elvis Chipezeze of Magesi FC, and Isheanesu Mauchi of Chippa United.

After sealing the victory, Marinica was on cloud nine, stating it’s a launch pad for The Warriors to reach the level they desired.

“I have consistently maintained that I select players on merit, choosing individuals I believe can most effectively serve the national team at any specific moment. Age is an irrelevant factor; our objective has been to construct a robust squad while simultaneously establishing a consistent winning pathway for the future,” Marinica explained.

“So yes, it was fantastic to see that even with some new players, with some younger players, we still managed to score, and this time also managed to keep clean sheets. The players have performed exceptionally well to unite as a group and diligently implement the specific tactical ideas we wanted to practice on the pitch.

“I believe this experience serves as a vital stepping stone for our continued progression from this point forward. Furthermore, immense congratulations must go to all the organisers for their unwavering support and the Botswana FA for their dedication in ensuring this tournament was perfect; I truly think they have done a fantastic job.”

Moreover, this is the first piece of silverware Zimbabwe has won under the Nqobile Magwizi-led ZIFA administration. And it is also the first time coach Marinica has managed to win a trophy.
