Malawi’s teenage sensation Mwisho Mhango has spoken about his close relationship with South African defender Ime Okon, attributing their friendship to helping him settle both on and off the pitch during an important stage of his early career.
The duo joined Hannover 96 at the same time and have formed a strong bond far from home. The 18-year-old says the relationship has been crucial as he adjusts to life in Europe. Mhango recently earned his first senior call-up for Malawi at the Mukuru Four Nations Tournament. After starting against Zambia in the semi, he describes the competition as a defining moment in his journey.
Meanwhile, Okon represented South Africa in two friendly matches against Panama during the recent FIFA break. The former SuperSport United defender is in contention for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
MHANGO ON MUKURU FOUR NATIONS DANCE
“I was very excited to be called up to the Malawi senior national team for the first time,” he told FARPost. “I just couldn’t believe it. I immediately called my mum when I saw my name in the squad. When I came here, I never thought I’d get to play, and the coach made me start against Zambia. I didn’t expect to start the game.”
While his rise on the international stage has gained momentum, Mhango singles out Okon’s presence in Germany as a source of stability during his transition abroad. “Ime is like my big brother. He helps me a lot. The first time I went to Germany, I felt lonely, far away from my family. Seeing him, he was the one who took care of me…”
Their friendship extends beyond the training ground. The pair spends time together, sharing meals and attending German-language classes twice a week as they adapt to a new culture. “We spend a lot of time together, eat out together, and attend German classes together twice a week. It really helps to have him around. He’s actually learning German quicker than I am,” Mhango added.
Adjusting to life in Germany has presented its challenges, especially the weather. “The weather is obviously a challenge, but we’re adapting to it,” he admitted.
IME OKON TIPPED TO SUCCEED WITH BAFANA BAFANA
Mhango commended Okon’s character and leadership qualities, emphasising the defender’s honesty and professionalism. “He’s a person of integrity. He’s a very honest guy. When you make a mistake, he’ll come to you and tell you. I like it because he always says the truth.”

On the field, Mhango believes Okon has all the attributes to succeed at the highest level, both in Europe and with South Africa. Okon has scored two goals after making 18 outings in the Bundesliga 2.
“He’s very strong and tall, and one-on-one he’s good… You need to be much quicker when you go to him. He’s going to succeed with South Africa because he’s a very good player. I’m 100% confident he will succeed.”
