AmaZulu FC midfielder Bongani Zungu appears increasingly likely to leave the club at the end of the season, with indications that he is not part of Usuthu’s plans beyond his current deal.
The 33-year-old has entered the final two months of his contract and admitted his future remains uncertain. However, FARPost understands that the club has already begun planning for life without the experienced midfielder, signalling the end of his short stint in Durban.
Zungu’s struggles for game time have been evident throughout the campaign. He has managed just five starts in all competitions, along with six appearances off the bench, under head coach Arthur Zwane. His recent omission from the squad, including the KwaZulu-Natal derby against Richards Bay FC, further underlined his diminished role.
BONGANI ZUNGU DOWN THE PECKING ORDER

Behind the scenes, AmaZulu’s recruitment strategy has also pointed towards a transition. The club recently secured the signing of promising youngster Luyolo Slatsha, who operates in a similar midfield role.
Slatsha’s arrival from Cape Town City FC is seen as part of a broader shift towards younger options, effectively pushing Zungu further down the pecking order.
In recent times, the Durban outfit has moved on from senior figures such as Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Ben Motshwari.
When Zungu joined AmaZulu FC in December 2024, he was viewed as a marquee addition expected to bring leadership and quality to the midfield. Instead, his time at the club has been marked by inconsistency and limited involvement.
Meanwhile, the KZN outfit recently confirmed the imminent departure of director of football Pedro Dias and assistant coach Simo Dladla. The club said in a statement it had decided against renewing their contracts.
“AmaZulu Football Club confirms that Director of Football, Mr Pedro Dias, and Assistant Coach, Mr Simo Dladla, will depart from the Club at the conclusion of the current season following the decision not to extend their respective contracts,” read the club statement.
“This development forms part of the Club’s broader strategic restructuring of the Football Department, aimed at streamlining operations and reinforcing a high-performance environment aligned with AmaZulu FC’s long-term ambitions.”
