Orlando Pirates have cemented their top spot in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] after securing an important 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at the Lentelus Sports Ground on Saturday.
The Buccaneers came into this encounter under pressure to return to winning ways following their disappointing 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby last weekend.
The Roscoe Krieling’s charges did exactly that, showing defensive resilience to grind out a result in the Western Cape to keep their dream of winning the DDC title alive. The win sees the Sea Robbers extend their lead at the top of the log standings to six points. Pirates currently sit on 60 points after 25 matches.
While the gap looks healthy, it is worth noting that the second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns were not in action this weekend. The Brazilians will be looking to capitalise on their game in hand to close the gap on the Soweto giants.
KAIZER CHIEFS’ MOMENTUM CONTINUES
On the other hand, Vela Khumalo’s boys continued with their impressive displays. The Glamour Boys extended their unbeaten streak to seven games after claiming a 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.

The victory over the KZN-based outfit saw Chiefs move to fourth position in the DDC table after leapfrogging Stellies, who lost to Pirates. Amakhosi are on 42 points from 25 matches.
Meanwhile, Richards Bay FC secured the KZN Derby bragging rights on Saturday, edging AmaZulu FC 2-1 at Mpumalanga Stadium. With the win over Usuthu, the Natal Rich Boyz are now placed seventh on the DDC table with 33 points after 25 games.
In addition, only three DDC fixtures took place over the Easter weekend.
