Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Rushine De Reuck is stamping his authority at Simba SC, delivering a commanding first season that has helped solidify the club’s defensive structure.
De Reuck joined Wekundu wa Msimbazi at the start of the campaign and has quickly become a key figure at the back.
His spell at Sundowns did not go as planned, while a loan move to Israel also proved unsuccessful. The former Maritzburg United defender struggled with injuries during his time abroad, ultimately cutting that stint short.
However, a move to Tanzania, where he is now coached by Steve Barker, has sparked a turnaround in fortunes. De Reuck has rediscovered his rhythm, playing a crucial role as Simba mounts a serious title challenge.
Interestingly, The Reds are closer than ever this season to ending the four-year dominance of their bitter rivals, Young Africans SC. Yanga have played 16 matches and sit on 38 points, while Simba are on 34 points with a game in hand.
Next month’s Kariakoo Derby – on 3 May 2026 – could prove decisive in determining the destination of the league title, with De Reuck expected to play a pivotal role in one of Tanzanian football’s biggest fixtures.
HOW HAS DE REUCK FARED SO FAR?

Since joining the Tanzanian giants, De Reuck has played in 23 matches across all competitions. 13 of those were in the league and 10 in the CAF Champions League, missing only two league games. Remarkably, the centre-back has stayed injury-free throughout the season, providing Simba with consistency and reliability in defence.
His impact is best reflected in Simba’s defensive record when he is on the pitch. The team has kept 13 clean sheets in 22 matches he has played, a result of his role in organising the defence and maintaining structure.
Beyond his primary defensive duties, De Reuck has also contributed offensively. He has chipped in with three goals, an added bonus that comes from his aerial threat. His performances have not gone unnoticed, earning him three Man of the Match awards so far this season.
The South African international is expected to lead Simba’s defence in their upcoming Dar es Salaam Derby against Azam FC on Sunday. Azam, coached by veteran coach Florent Ibenge, currently sits third in the league with 32 points, just two points behind Simba. With one additional game played, a victory for Azam could see them leapfrog Simba in the standings.
