Mokoena identifies Relebohile Mofokeng’s ‘perfect’ replacement at Pirates

Relebohile Mofokeng in action for Orlando Pirates

Former Orlando Pirates star Lebohang Mokoena has identified the “perfect” replacement for Relebohile Mofokeng should the Bafana Bafana international secure a move abroad.

This comes after Mofokeng’s stellar displays have reportedly caught the eye of Ligue 1 giants AS Monaco.

Mofokeng has been a key figure of the Pirates’ attack. The 21-year-old, nicknamed ‘President Yama2000’, scored his first professional hat-trick in the 6-0 hammering of TS Galaxy in their league match on Sunday, 22 March 2026.

In the current campaign, ‘Rele’ has featured in 28 matches across all competitions, scoring eight goals and contributing six assists for the Buccaneers.

With his stellar displays, Mofokeng was named the Betway Premiership Player of the Month for March 2026. This award marked a back-to-back achievement for the midfield sensation, as he also won the accolade for the previous January/February 2026 period.

LEBOHANG MOKOENA ON WHY WITBOOI WOULD BE PERFECT REPLACEMENT FOR MOFOKENG

Mokoena believes that Emile Witbooi, the son of former Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City FC winger Surprise Ralani, would be the ideal successor to ‘Rele’.

However, ‘Cheeseboy’, as he’s popularly known, noted that the youngster won’t come cheaply from the Citizens, given his standout performances at the junior national and club levels.

“I love the boy; plus, he is the son of Surprise Ralani, you know. It’s in the blood. You know, his club doesn’t want to release him. They are probably going to want to sell him for a huge amount. This is because he is one for the future,” said Mokoena on the SoccerBeat Podcast.

“He has experience as well, coming in as an international player with the Under-17 and Under-20 teams. So, he has come through those structures, and he is also a well-developed player. You’re going to get something out of that player as he gets older and matures.

“He is a suitable replacement for ‘Rele’ because Emile Witbooi is also a player who can be given that free role. Also, he’s able to get into those spaces. He is very tricky and skilful. So he can score goals and is a crowd favourite. I really don’t think the fans will even feel that ‘Rele’ has left.”
