Kruger United take pole position as NFD title race intensifies

Kruger United in action against Lerumo Lions FC

Kruger United have taken pole position in the Motsepe Foundation Championship title race after defeating Lerumo Lions FC 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at KaNyamazane Stadium.

The Mpumalanga-based side collected crucial maximum points in the league to leapfrog Cape Town City FC and Casric Stars in the tightly contested title race in the Championship.

Kruger moved to the summit of the log standings with 43 points after winning 12 matches, drawing seven, and suffering four defeats in 23 matches played. They have opened a two-point gap on second-placed Milford FC, who are on 41 points.

The Bushbuckridge-based side is three points ahead of Cape Town City and Hungry Lions FC, who are positioned third and fourth, respectively.

Elsewhere, Casric Starsโ€”who remain firmly in the hunt for Betway Premiership promotionโ€”missed a golden opportunity to climb the standings after being held to a 1-1 draw by Milford FC on Wednesday. Both sides entered the tie looking to bounce back from weekend heartbreak, having seen their fairytale Nedbank Cup runs end in the semi-finals. Casric Stars and Milford FC were eliminated by Durban City FC and TS Galaxy, respectively, just days before their league encounter.

Following the stalemate against the KZN-based outfit, Casric occupy fifth place with 39 points. They now face a high-pressure run-in, needing to maximise their points return in the remaining seven matches to keep their automatic promotion dreams alive. And as it stands, they trail the log leaders by four points and sit just a single point behind the PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoff spots.

Meanwhile, in another match on Wednesday, Upington City FC beat Venda FC 3-1 at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium. Bafana Ba Gucci are aiming to at least finish in the top three to qualify for the playoffs and possibly secure a place in the top-flight.

This season, Upington City have won 10 league games, drawn six, and lost seven times. In addition, they are currently occupying sixth position on the log with 36 points in the second division.
