Lerumo Lions FC chairlady Sibongile Marokana has reflected on her side’s performance in their debut campaign in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Lerumo are currently competing in their first season in the professional ranks after acquiring the status of Pretoria Callies prior to the start of the 2025/26 term. The club was competing in the SAFA North West ABC Motsepe League before purchasing a PSL status.
Currently, Lerumo occupy 11th position on the Motsepe Foundation Championship table. They have collected 27 points from 23 matches, placing them in the mid-table and away from the dangers of the relegation zone.
While debut seasons are often difficult for some teams in the professional ranks, the North West-based outfit has laid a solid foundation for the club’s bright future.
‘WE’VE LEARNED A LOT IN TERMS OF THE GAME ITSELF’: SIBONGILE MAROKANA
Marokana has expressed her satisfaction with the club’s debut season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, insisting the side has adapted well to the demands of the second tier.

Lerumo sit comfortably nine points clear of the relegation zone but remarkably still retain a mathematical chance of securing a PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoff spot. They currently trail third-place Cape Town City FC by 13 points with the season entering its final stretch.
“I think we are doing very well in our first season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship,” Marokana told FARPost in an exclusive interview. “We have also learned a lot in terms of the game itself, both on and off the field. I believe this is the beginning of a very successful process. So far, we have done well.”
Meanwhile, the chairlady also highlighted that the team hasn’t often been in the relegation zone that newcomers face.
“We have never really been a threat of relegation, which is very rare for a team competing in the league for its first season,” she added. “For us, so far so good, and we will continue to fight until the last day of the season.”
With seven games remaining in the current campaign, Lerumo will look to finish in a better position to set good standards for themselves for the 2026/27 season.
