Orlando Pirates have joined the race for the signature of the talented Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner to beef up their squad for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.

The Buccaneers are already preparing for the next season after identifying Leaner as a transfer target for the July 2026 transfer window. In the past two transfer windows, Pirates have had a robust approach to the market, signing quality players who have improved their squad as they push to win the league.

Pirates signed players such as Sipho Mbule, Oswin Appollis, Sihle Nduli, Tshepang Moremi, Kamogelo Sebelebele, Lebone Seema, Yanela Mbuthuma, Nkosikhona Ndaba, Abdoulaye Mariko, at the start of the season.

The new signings have since played a major role in Pirates’ chase for the elusive league title, and they are challenging Mamelodi Sundowns for the trophy. The Soweto giants are currently second on the log standings after accumulating 54 points, while defending champions Sundowns are at the top with 56 points in 23 games.

Pirates continued to bolster their team in the January window after snapping up Daniel Msendami, Andre de Jong, and Mpho Chabatsane.

With the current campaign nearing its end, FARPost has learned that the Sea Robbers are keen on signing Learner, who was previously linked to Kaizer Chiefs. The 28-year-old goalie has been a key figure between the sticks for Sekhukhune over the past few seasons.

This season, Leaner has made 19 appearances across all competitions, conceded 15 goals, and kept 9 clean sheets at Sekhukhune. Leaner has been with Babina Noko for three seasons after joining the club in 2023 from Maritzburg United, which has since rebranded as Durban City FC.

The Cape Town-born shot stopper has also received recognition from the Bafana Bafana head coach, Hugo Broos, after being called up for the squad that faced Panama in the back-to-back friendlies over a week ago.
