Chippa United handed lifeline after FIFA transfer ban

Chippa United have come forward to clarify their current standing regarding a FIFA-imposed transfer ban, confirming they have been granted a lifeline to resolve an outstanding financial dispute with former coach Luc Eymael.

In a letter dated 8 April 2026, seen by this publication, the world football governing body, FIFA, confirmed that the Gqeberha-based outfit is prohibited from registering new players, both nationally and internationally.

The sanction stems from the Betway Premiership clubโ€™s failure to comply with a previous ruling regarding outstanding payments owed to Eymael.

In February this year, the Chilli Boys were ordered to settle a debt with Eymael, with FIFA issuing a 45-day ultimatum to clear the arrears or face a mandatory transfer ban. The directive required a payment of R250,000, plus 5% interest.

Meanwhile, in an official statement released on Monday, 13 April, the Gqeberha-based side addressed the reports, categorising the situation as an “ongoing administrative matter” that is nearing a resolution.

CHIPPA UNITED’S SETTLEMENT DEADLINE SET FOR AUGUST

The Chilli Boys hierarchy also assured supporters that the situation is being handled amicably before the August transfer window period.

“The club would like to clarify that this is an ongoing administrative matter, currently being addressed in good spirit between the club and Mr Luc Nico Eymael,” said the club in a statement.

“The outstanding amount is approximately R200,000, and the club has been granted until the next registration window period in August to settle the matter.”

Chippa further emphasised that there is a “positive and professional understanding” between both parties, ensuring that the process will be finalised before the start of the 2026/27 season.

The Vusumuzi Vilakazi-coached side went on to state that the matter will not disrupt their current Betway Premiership campaign, because the settlement deadline falls in August, and the clubโ€™s ability to compete in their remaining fixtures remains unaffected.

“This matter does not impact the clubโ€™s football operations,” the statement continued. “At present, the clubโ€™s full focus remains on the remaining five games of the season, with attention directed towards achieving positive results.”

Chippa, who are currently pushing for a strong finish to the season, have called on their loyal supporters to “stand firm behind the Chilli Boys” as the 2025/26 term is reaching its fever pitch.
