Ex-Spurs coach Connor’s impact leaves Botswana giants two points from title

Former Cape Town Spurs coach Sean Connor is just two points away from guiding Gaborone United to the Botswana Premier League title, capping off a remarkable turnaround since his arrival in February.

This follows a commanding 6–2 victory over Orapa United in their latest league outing.

Connor took charge of the defending champions after leaving Jwaneng Galaxy, who were top of the table at the time, and has since overseen a near-flawless run. Gaborone United have surged to 65 points after 26 matches and now need just two more points from their remaining four fixtures to secure the title.

Since his appointment, Gaborone United have won seven consecutive league games, collecting 21 points, scoring 19 goals and keeping six clean sheets, a run that has transformed them into one of the most efficient sides in the league.

Connor’s wider record underlines his impact. He is currently on a 15-match unbeaten streak in the league, with his last defeat coming away from home at Jwaneng Galaxy in November 2025 before making the switch.

The winning streak has opened a commanding lead at the top of the table. Their closest challengers, Mochudi Centre Chiefs in second place, sit on 53 points, followed by Connor’s former side Jwaneng Galaxy on 51 points with a game in hand; however, the gap is beginning to look decisive given Gaborone United’s relentless form.

Meanwhile, the club’s director, Nicolas Zakhem, not one to outwardly show satisfaction, suggested the Irishman still has a milestone to reach.

“He has a record to break as a coach. [Dimitar] Pantev won nine league games in a row towards the end of that season,” said Zakhem. “That’s how we won the league. We were fifth at the time [he came], and by the eighth consecutive win, the title was secured. The ninth was just a bonus for us.

“Of course, Sean may feel pressure, perhaps from himself. I haven’t placed him under any. I don’t speak to him in that way or tell him what he needs to achieve. He knows what is expected.”

With fixtures against Tafic away, followed by home games against Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Calendar Stars and BDF XI, the title is now firmly within reach. Just two points from those matches will confirm Gaborone United as champions once again.

This weekend, Galaxy turn their focus to the Orange FA Cup when they play Flamingo Sua away in the north.
