Equatorial Guinea international goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga is reportedly considering parting ways with Sekhukhune United at the end of the season following a difficult campaign.
Sapunga joined Babina Noko on a free transfer at the start of the season after leaving Polokwane City FC, where he had established himself as a dependable shot-stopper. The 33-year-old signed a two-year deal, meaning he still has one year remaining on his contract beyond the 2025/26 season.
However, his move has not gone according to plan. Sapunga has endured a frustrating season marked by limited game time and a reported exclusion from tactical plans. Since his arrival, he has made just two appearances in the Betway Premiership, finding himself on the fringes almost immediately.
He has only been on the bench eight times across all competitions. Former head coach Eric Tinkler is believed to have made it clear that the veteran goalkeeper was not in his plans.
Despite the subsequent coaching change, Sapungaโs situation has remained largely unchanged. This has prompted the experienced goalkeeper to consider seeking a fresh start elsewhere in order to safeguard his international standing with Equatorial Guinea.
NSABATA FACTOR ADDS PRESSURE

Adding further complexity to Sekhukhuneโs goalkeeping hierarchy is the presence of Zambian international Toaster Nsabata. Having rejoined the club in July 2025 for a second stint, Nsabata has been ahead of Sapunga in the pecking order, featuring in 10 matches across all competitions this season.
Both international goalkeepers have largely played second fiddle to Bafana Bafana shot-stopper Renaldo Leaner, who has been the preferred first choice. Leaner will have to pick himself up after his blunders cost Sekhukhune in a 3-1 loss to Stellenbosch FC on Friday in the league.
He was replaced by Nsabata in the 80th minute, and interim coach Paulus Masehe explained the decision to take him off. โI think it was more to protect him; his confidence was a bit low after committing two costly mistakes. Itโs a game of football; itโs a game of mistakes. Thatโs why weโre here to protect them, to make sure that at least we save a bit of pride for them,โ Masehe told SuperSport TV in a post-match interview.
Although Sapunga remains under contract until June 2027, sources close to the player indicate he is open to exploring a mutual termination or a transfer. Such a move could also benefit the club by freeing up a foreign player slot.
Sekhukhune United are expected to reshuffle their squad ahead of next season, with newly appointed director of football Dr Walter Steenbok set to play a key role in planning for the future.
