Sports Minister McKenzie announces World Cup incentives for local supporters

Minister Gayton McKenzie has confirmed that 16 fortunate football supporters will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as part of a new departmental initiative.

The official rollout follows a conceptual idea shared by the Minister in early April regarding his vision for rewarding the “12th man” of South African football. Interestingly, the initiative gained momentum following a highly publicised friction with self-proclaimed “Super Fan” Joy โ€˜Mama Joyโ€™ Chauke.

Chauke had previously voiced her grievances against McKenzie, criticising the Minister for the lack of state sponsorship regarding her attendance at the global showpiece set to be hosted across the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

Minister McKenzie initially floated the proposal on social media as a way to pivot the conversation toward rewarding grassroots loyalty rather than individual personalities.

“I think we should have each club nominate the best and most consistent supporter for a trip to the World Cupโ€”someone who rarely misses a game. I will start calling sponsors when I land,” McKenzie posted on X (formerly Twitter) back on 6 April 2026.

Addressing a media briefing at Freedom Park in Pretoria on Thursday, 23 April 2026, McKenzie confirmed that the vision has now become a reality. He revealed that 16 lucky fans will be granted an all-expenses-paid trip to witness the highly anticipated opening match of the tournament between co-hosts Mexico and Bafana Bafana on June 11.

The Minister clarified that while the department is facilitating the logistics, the private sector has stepped up to ensure the fans are well-catered for during their stay in North America.

“Daily allowances will be covered by two major corporate sponsors. As a department, our role will be to assist with the facilitation of visas and the allocation of match tickets,” McKenzie informed the gathered media.

Regarding the selection process, the Minister emphasised transparency to avoid any further “super fan” favouritism debates.

“We are going to take 16 lucky fans to the Mexico game. The selection of who those fans are will be overseen by an independent panel of judges. We will also publish the full criteria of the selection process on the official digital pages of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.”

In a further boost for football nostalgia, the Minister also disclosed plans for a high-profile exhibition match. The fixture will see the Bafana Bafana legends from the iconic 2010 World Cup squad square off against their Mexican counterparts.

The match serves as a historical callback to the two nations’ famous 1-1 draw in the opening match of the 2010 World Cup at FNB Stadiumโ€”a moment etched in South African sporting history through Siphiwe Tshabalalaโ€™s “Goal for all of Africa.” This legends’ clash is expected to serve as a curtain-raiser for the festivities leading up to the 2026 tournament.
