Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen has explained the tactical approach Amakhosi will employ to nullify the threat of cross-town rivals Orlando Pirates in Sundayโ€™s highly anticipated Soweto Derby.

The two Soweto giants are set to lock horns in a high-stakes Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium, where three crucial points and ultimate bragging rights will be at stake. Kaizer Chiefs enter this encounter against rivals Orlando Pirates on the back of a hard-fought goalless draw against Polokwane City FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium last weekend.

Prior to that stalemate in Limpopo, the Glamour Boys had been on a formidable five-match winning streak, overcoming a mid-season slump that was punctuated by a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of Pirates in February 2026. During this resurgence, Amakhosi claimed vital victories against Durban City FC, Orbit College FC, and TS Galaxy, while also securing a dominant league double over Magesi FC.

This impressive unbeaten run over their last six fixtures has seen Chiefs climb steadily to third position on the league standings, firmly placing them on course to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup next season. Chiefs have now accumulated 46 points from 24 matches, currently trailing only Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, who occupy the first and second spots on the table, respectively.

On the other side of the divide, Pirates have been in a devastating vein of form, racking up a remarkable 16 goals in their last four league outings. This prolific run included emphatic 6-0 and 5-0 victories over TS Galaxy and Golden Arrows. The Buccaneers have truly rediscovered their clinical edge in the final third, with star attackers such as Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis proving to be absolutely instrumental to their offensive juggernaut.

As Chiefs prepare to face Pirates with the aim of avenging their 3-0 humiliation in the previous encounter, Petersen has explained that the Naturena-based side is focused on limiting the Sea Robbers’ scoring opportunities.

Reflecting on the lessons learned since their last meeting, the Amakhosi captain noted the progress his side has made in balancing their defensive solidity with a newfound clinical edge in front of goal.

โ€œThe first derby was disappointing, and since that derby we’ve played a couple of games, and we’ve done fairly well in those games,โ€ Petersen said.

โ€œFor me, I think from that derby we needed to correct some things, which is scoring goals, and we started to convert our chances. We’ve been solid in defence. So the emphasis is just on usโ€”what we’ve been doing well and continuing with it, and making sure that we capitalise on our chances [against Pirates].

โ€œWe also need to make sure that they [Pirates] don’t get a lot of chances, we nullify them, and make sure that we stop their attacks. We know what we are up against; they’ve been on form, I think they are unbeaten in their last eight games. So it’s two teams facing each other, and the stakes are high. I think both teams are in phenomenal shape, and it’s going to be a good fixture.โ€
