Pitso Dladla refuses to take credit for Nedbank Cup triumph

Durban City FC interim coach Pitso Dladla has deflected personal glory following a historic Nedbank Cup triumph. The Betway Premiership side were crowned champions after a 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

It’s a first domestic trophy for the KwaZulu-Natal side, who only gained promotion to the elite league last season.

Dladla, who succeeded Sinethemba Badela, has not only secured the Nedbank Cup but has also steered the team toward a potential top-eight finish and qualification for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

While addressing the media after the match in Polokwane, Dladla dedicated the win to his technical staff at Durban City FC.

“Let me put it like this. When you are appointed more as an interim coach its more of a collective effort,” he said.

“We equally work together with coach Ashtaf Hendricks and goalkeeper coach Rowen Fernandez. We discuss a lot of things and make decisions and plans together, which feels more representative of them to me. But we recognise every component, especially within the technical team, our conditioning guys, medical team, and our performance department.

“We work hard and sit, discuss, and we argue, but at the end of the day, it is more about the team and not about the individual.”

DURBAN CITY COACH SETS SIGHTS ON CAF A LICENSE

Dladla has recently made it clear that he wants to further his coaching badges and complete his CAF A license. And with Durban City FC having clinched the Nedbank Cup, they have now secured qualification for the CAF Confed Cup.

Consequently, Dladla requires either a CAF A Licence or a CAF Pro Licence to lead the side in the competition. However, it remains to be seen whether the club will appoint Dladla and the current technical team on a permanent basis.

Durban City are left with four matches to play in the Betway Premiership. They currently have 36 points and stand a good chance of qualifying for the top eight.
