The future of coach Kwanele Kopo at Pretoria University FC is hanging in the balance as the Tshwane-based side heads into a tense end to the season. AmaTuks’ campaign has been unconvincing, with just seven wins, 11 draws and 10 defeats.
Their latest setback, a 1-0 defeat to Motsepe Foundation Championship newcomers Lerumo Lions on Saturday, in which they also missed a crucial penalty, put their form and direction under Kopo into question.
Appointed to replace Tlisane Motaung, Kopo arrived with high hopes that they would put up a fight for promotion. On paper, the squad appeared more than capable.
The club reinforced heavily, bringing in experienced and promising names such as Prince Nxumalo, Aphelele Teto, Abel Mabaso, Veli Mothwa, Sidney Mtshweni, and Ntando Nkosi on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, while Luvuyo Phewa has featured sparingly.
Despite this, the results have not matched the investment. There is a growing sense that this could be one of the strongest squads AmaTuks have assembled in recent years, yet performances have not reflected that potential. The contrast is stark compared to previous campaigns, which saw them finish second in the 2023/24 season, narrowly miss promotion via the playoffs, and finish 10th last term.

BLACK LEOPARDS CASE COULD DRAG AMATUKS DEEPER IN TROUBLE
A fresh threat looms after Black Leopards reportedly launched legal action, arguing that they were unable to register players earlier in the season due to a transfer ban.
They are seeking replays of matches played under those circumstances. Should the case succeed, it could have significant implications for the league standings and Pretoria University are directly in the firing line.
Their 2-2 draw against Leopards could be replayed, and a different result might drag AmaTuks deeper into trouble. With Midlands Wanderers and The Bees sitting just below them on 31 points – a tally Tuks could find themselves level with if outcomes shift – the margin for error is small.
Kopo now faces two high-stakes fixtures to close out the season, starting with Milford United, who are chasing a playoff spot and currently sit second behind already-promoted Kruger United. AmaTuks will then take on Midlands Wanderers in what could become a decisive relegation battle, depending on how the legal proceedings unfold.
