Why Sundowns’ Kekana is not reading into Chiefs’ Siwelele setback

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana says they will not let Kaizer Chiefs’ defeat by Siwelele FC mislead them when they host the Soweto giants in a Betway Premiership match at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilians lead the standings as they push for a record-extending ninth consecutive league crown. They are in the final push with three games remaining before they close their campaign.

Going into Saturday’s match, Sundowns are coming from last Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Polokwane City at Loftus. That win came fresh from a 1-0 triumph over the same side away in Limpopo three days earlier.

Before completing a double over Rise had Shine, Masandawana had recorded two draws and risked their campaign with Orlando Pirates giving them a spirited challenge for the league title. But they are back in charge of their own destiny as they prepare to host Chiefs.

Amakhosi arrive in Tshwane licking the wounds from last week’s 2-0 defeat by Siwelele away in Bloemfontein. It was a result which ended a seven-match unbeaten streak for the Soweto giants.

They lost to Siwelele after having registered two straight draws, leaving them winless in their last three league encounters. But Kekana is not buying into the recent loss and is wary of the positives Chiefs have recorded lately.

“It was crucial for us to get back-to-back wins, considering that we drew the past games. The confidence is back up with the lads, obviously, we want to finish strong. We are all in good spirits and we can’t wait for Wednesday’s game,” said Kekana.

“It’s going to be a tough game, I think they [Chiefs] have done well, especially in the second round, to be in the position they are in. Despite them having lost against Siwelele, we know what their form has been like.

“So we will be wary of it, but obviously, we will plan to nullify it on the day. So, it will be a tough game, but one we will be prepared for.

“Obviously, we’re taking it one game at a time, the focus right now is Kaizer Chiefs. I think when we get to the final, that’s when we’ll be able to prepare and focus on it.

“But right now, in the immediate, our main focus is definitely the game against Kaizer Chiefs. And we will be looking to be as well prepared as we can so that we can get a positive outcome on the day.”
