Durban City FC goalkeeper Darren Keet has opened up about the impact Rowen Fernandez has had on his game, describing their relationship as that of a husband and wife.

Fernandez has been Keet’s goalkeeper coach since the beginning of the season, when the 36-year-old joined the club from Cape Town City FC.

Keet has been in superb form for the club this season, racking up 12 clean sheets in the Betway Premiership and another two in the Nedbank Cup. He played a vital role in that competition, leading Durban City to the title after defeating TS Galaxy in the final held in Polokwane a fortnight ago.

The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper has also been tipped as one of the favourites for the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament award.

WHY DARREN KEET SAYS HIS WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH ROWEN FERNANDEZ IS WEIRD

“It’s a weird one because obviously his experience plays a big role,” said Keet.ย “But a lot of times I have to keep him calm, and a lot of times he has to keep me calm. So we work well together. We are like a husband and wife out there sometimes.

“So it’s definitely been good, and obviously with his experience and what he has achieved in his career and what he can pass down to the rest of us, especially the young keepers coming up, I think it’s absolutely fantastic. It goes to show he has done a brilliant job for the club.”

DURBAN CITY GOALKEEPER REVEALS HOW A CHANGE OF ENVIRONMENT HELPED HIM

Keet also admitted that the change of environment from Cape Town City to Durban has helped him play the kind of football that he has always wanted to play. He has been a key figure for the club this season and played a leadership role.

“Obviously, it’s very good. Sometimes you need a fresh start and a change of location always helps,” he added.

“So this definitely helped and helped me get to a standard of play that I want to play.”
