Why seasoned PSL coach is backing struggling TS Galaxy’s Parker

Veteran coach Dan Malesela has thrown his weight behind Bernard Parker while explaining why the former Kaizer Chiefs striker deserves patience in his budding coaching career.

Parker was recently appointed as TS Galaxy’s interim coach following the departure of Adnan Beganovic. The Rockets’ job is seen as a big chance for the 40-year-old to prove himself as a head coach.

But he has struggled in the four games that he has been in charge of so far. He has guided TS Galaxy to three Betway Premiership draws and a defeat in the Nedbank Cup final.

To highlight how difficult life in the dugout has been for Parker, his side has shared spoils against struggling sides Magesi FC, Marumo Gallants FC and Chippa United. They are 12th in the table and not yet safe from the PSL Promotional/Relegation playoffs.

Failing to help arrest a difficult run in the league, Parker has extended TS Galaxy’s winless streak to 13 league matches. The ex-Bafana Bafana star is now preparing his side to host Mamelodi Sundowns in a league game at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night.

It is a must-win affair for Masandawana, who will wait for Orlando Pirates to complete their games to learn their league title fate. After the Sundowns match, TS Galaxy will wrap up their season by visiting Golden Arrows.

‘UNFAIR TO JUDGE PARKER’: MALESELA

“I was with Bernard at the School of Excellence for a long time. I know his character, and he is my boy,” Malesela told FARPost.

“I know he has a strong character and a big heart. I don’t think this [run for form] will discourage him. He will rise and start winning; it’s just a matter of time. You can’t judge him over a few matches. I know he has just started, and he is still learning and trying to find himself as a coach.

“So, I think it’s unfair to judge him now. Give him a chance depending on what he feels like and also what his team feel. If he wants to take over and they agree, so be it. But we cannot judge, especially when you are trying to find your feet.

“I was fortunate in my coaching career because I went through all the processes. I started in development, your ABC Motsepe league, First Division and then the Premiership.

“By the time I got to the PSL, I just hit the ground running. There was never any room for regret or disgruntlement for me.”
