Mamelodi Sundowns loanee Ricardo Goss has laid down a marker ahead of the upcoming global showpiece, declaring his ultimate ambition to secure a spot in South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

Over the last few years, Goss has patiently played understudy to the undisputed national team number one and captain, Ronwen Williams. However, the 32-year-old shot-stopper has made a roaring case for himself this season, showcasing spectacular form by registering an impressive 14 clean sheets in 28 Betway Premiership appearances.

With Bafana head coach Hugo Broos expected to officially announce his final World Cup roster on May 27, the race for places is reaching a fever pitch.

Barring any late injuries, Williams is almost guaranteed to have a ticket to North America, meaning Goss faces intense competition for the remaining goalkeeper slots against the likes of Orlando Pirates’ dependable number one Sipho Chaine, as well as resurgent Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

Meanwhile, Goss—who is currently on loan from Sundowns—also reflected on Siwelele FC’s overall performance this season. Speaking ahead of their penultimate match, the shot-stopper praised the squad’s resilience. The Bloemfontein-based side secured a crucial 1-0 victory over struggling Magesi FC at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Saturday, a result that significantly boosted their chances of securing a top-eight finish.

“I think we have really done well at home, and defensively we have been sound,” he added.

‘I think we have only conceded three goals here, if I am not mistaken, from eight or nine games… I think if we can keep the record that we have been going with we can get the three points that we need to be closer to the top eight.

Siwelele will wrap up their season away to Sekhukhune United on Saturday, 23 May at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
