When the curtain came down on Kaizer Chiefs’ rollercoaster 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, the mood among the Amakhosi faithful was sombre. A narrow 1-0 defeat to Chippa United wasn’t the closing note anyone wanted.
Yet, amid the disappointment in Durban, a bright ray of sunshine pierced through the clouds.
Eighteen-year-old Takalani Mazhamba stepped onto the pitch, looked up at the roaring stands, and completed the ultimate football fairytale. By taking his place between the sticks, the teenage prodigy realised the dream of every academy starlet and officially became the youngest goalkeeper to debut for Chiefs in the PSL era.
FROM VENDA TO SOWETO: TAKALANI MAZHAMBA REVEALS REALITY OF EMOTIONAL CHIEFS BOW
Mazhamba’s story is raw, inspiring, and dripping with local flavour. He is the epitome of the boy who refused to let his background limit his future. Reflecting on his historic milestone, the shot-stopper retraced his steps from his rural roots to the biggest stage in domestic football.

“I’m a boy from a village in Venda who grew up in Soweto,” Mazhamba said. “That’s where I started playing football. I joined Kaizer Chiefs when I was 13, and today [on Saturday, 23 May]I made my debut for the senior team. To be honest, I am so happy and grateful. I really appreciate the opportunity that the Kaizer Chiefs Family have given me.”
Mazhamba didn’t just stumble into the first team; he kicked the door down with commanding, mature-beyond-his-years performances for the reserves in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC].
When the senior technical team called him up to train with the big boys, the teenager didn’t shrink. Instead, he treated the Naturena training grounds as a lecture room, absorbing golden nuggets of advice from the seasoned internationals ahead of him.
“Training with the First Team has been a great benefit for me,” Mazhamba revealed. “I have learned a lot from the likes of Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma, and Fiacre Ntwari, who have all been teaching me, giving me little tips to improve my goalkeeping.”
FEEDING OFF THE ENERGY OF THE AMAKHOSI FAITHFUL
Wearing the Chiefs number-one jersey is a heavy burden, one that has broken older, more experienced keepers. Yet, Mazhamba possesses an innate self-belief that convinced the coaching staff he had the mental steel to handle the pressure.
That doesn’t mean the butterflies didn’t attack his stomach when he found out he was starting.
“When I was told I would start I was a bit nervous, this being my first call to step onto the big stage,” the teenager candidly admitted. “But I thought to myself that I have been doing this for seven years, it’s just another match, and I must produce my A-game. The cheers I got from the supporters when I took to the field immediately gave me confidence. I thought, ‘Boy, you can do this, the fans are with you. Just play your game and enjoy it’.”
The debut lacked the Hollywood ending of a clean sheet and three points, but Mazhamba’s individual performance gave the fans plenty to cheer about.
Over the 90 minutes, he looked assured, marshalled his box with authority, and produced a jaw-dropping, world-class point-blank save to deny Chippa’s Sirgio Kammies in the second half.
True to his competitive nature, the youngster wasn’t in the mood to celebrate personal milestones while the team suffered a loss. “No goalkeeper accepts conceding goals, so I am not happy with that,” he stated bluntly. “But we take it, we grow from it, and keep moving forward from there.”
With the gruelling season over, Mazhamba will head into the winter break to recharge his batteries. But the fire in his belly is already burning for the 2026/27 campaign. While he plans to relax and roar on Bafana Bafana in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, his goal is to fight for the starting jersey in the senior team.
“My ambition is to play more next season,” Mazhamba declared boldly. “In the off-season, I’ll be supporting Bafana Bafana in the World Cup and then look forward to training hard in pre-season.”
