Hope FC head coach Dylan Deane has explained Craig Martin’s key role at the club following the former PSL’s satisfying displays at the ongoing SAFA ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs in Mthatha, Eastern Cape.
The ex-Orlando Pirates winger, Martin, signed with the Western Cape outfit in October last year as a free agent.
The 32-year-old was the star of the show on Tuesday, 2 June, as the Western Cape champions kicked off their ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs campaign with a 3-1 victory over hosts FC Ravens at the Mthatha Stadium.
Martin, a former Cape Town City FC star, bagged a brace to put Hope FC in the driving seat as they eye promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
He joined Hope FC—who acquired the status of Oriented Birds ahead of the 2025/26 season—in October last year. After being released by Chippa United in July 2025, many wondered what the veteran’s next move would be. Deane, however, knew exactly how to utilise Martin’s strengths.

‘LEADERSHIP IS EVERYTHING’: DYLAN DEANE
Speaking to FARPost after the victory in the Eastern Cape, Deane emphasised that Martin’s value transcends his goals on the pitch.
“You know, leadership is everything. When we made Craig Martin the captain of the team, I said to him, ‘You don’t have to talk; what you do on the field is inspiring for these people [Hope FC young players],'” Deane told FARPost.
Meanwhile, in a division often defined by youthful energy and unpredictability, Deane believes Martin’s top-flight experience provides the necessary calm for the Western Cape outfit.
“He has been an inspiration the whole season. Honestly, he has been fantastic,” Deane added. “I think when we have a leader like him, the rest of the boys come along so easily. His commitment, actions, attitude, and leadership are so amazing.
“You know, experience is something else; that’s why we brought him into this team. He has experience in good positions.”
Hope FC’s victory over FC Ravens serves as a massive boost for their promotional ambitions, with Martin leading the line and wearing the armband.
