Willy Moloto, Thabang Matuludi’s former coach at Polokwane City FC, says it is no surprise that the fullback has rapidly evolved into a world-class talent.
Matuludi was recently named in Hugo Broos’ final 26-man Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and is currently with the team in Mexico preparing for the global showpiece.
The 27-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers in the domestic league over the past few seasons. His stellar displays didn’t go unnoticed, earning him a well-deserved spot in the Bafana Bafana squad for the AFCON tournament in Morocco.
Unsurprisingly, Matuludi’s form has made him a hot commodity, with the defender heavily linked to local giants Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates over the last two seasons.

It was Moloto who signed the defender while he was playing at SAFA ABC Motsepe League side The Dolphins in 2021, when he was coach at Rise and Shine. Since then, Matuludi hasn’t looked back and has also been the captain of Polokwane City in some matches of the just-ended season.
“Remember, even before he went to the AFCON, you could see he had matured. He’s a diamond,” Moloto told FARPost.
“I think this is the beginning of good things. One thing about him is that he is humble and disciplined. He is also dedicated to his job. You will never hear one negative thing about him. He’s someone who listens and respects people.
“Look, even if he doesn’t play, it won’t be a bad thing. It’s an experience for him. But I think he will play a major role in the World Cup for the country. He should not put himself under any pressure. He should just wait for his chance to come to God willingly.”
