MEXICO CITY: Mbekezeli Mbokazi will be available for selection when Bafana Bafana open their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Mexico on Thursday, despite questions over whether his red card in the qualifiers could rule him out.
Bafana will face the co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca at 9 PM [RSA Time].
Broos has to decide on his centre-back pairing, with emerging defenders Ime Okon
and Olwethu Makhanya competing with Nkosinathi Sibisi. One of the trio will line up alongside the Chicago Fire FC centre-back.
The 20-year-old centre-back has quickly established himself as one of the most important members of coach Hugo Broos’ squad, earning four senior international caps. Concerns over his eligibility emerged after Mbokazi was sent off during the qualifier against Zimbabwe in Durban.
‘TLB’ received two quick yellow cards late in the match after a heated altercation with Zimbabwean winger Tawanda Maswanhise. The dismissal, issued by referee Mustapha Ghorbal, initially triggered an automatic one-match suspension. He subsequently missed the final 2026 qualifier against Rwanda in Mbombela.
The incident was later reviewed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee under Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. In addition to serving the suspension, the defender was handed a financial penalty of approximately R108,000.
Ordinarily, a red card can result in further disciplinary consequences, raising fears that Mbokazi could carry an outstanding suspension into the World Cup finals. However, a crucial amendment to the tournament regulations has removed that possibility.
Ahead of the expanded 48-team tournament, the FIFA Council approved changes to Article 10 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Regulations.
FIFA DISCIPLINARY RULE CHANGE CLEARS MBEKEZELI MBOKAZI

The amendment states: “Single yellow cards and pending one- or two-match suspensions as a consequence of cautions in different matches in the preliminary competition, an indirect red card, or a direct red card for denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity or for serious foul play are not carried over to the final competition. Any other pending match suspensions imposed as a result of a red card in matches in the preliminary competition are carried over to the final competition.”
The decision was taken to ensure participating nations could field their strongest possible squads at the World Cup while maintaining disciplinary integrity.
Since the former Orlando Pirates star’s dismissal resulted from two yellow cards — an indirect red card — and he has already served the automatic suspension against Rwanda, there is no remaining sanction to be carried into the World Cup finals.
That means Broos will have the highly rated defender available for selection against Mexico, providing a significant boost to South Africa’s hopes of securing a positive result in their opening Group A encounter.
ANOTHER FIFA DISCIPLINARY CHANGE AHEAD OF 2026 WORLD CUP
Mbokazi’s availability comes as welcome news for Bafana, who are seeking a strong start against the tournament hosts. Despite his limited international experience, the defender has become a trusted option in Broos’ backline and is expected to play a prominent role throughout the World Cup campaign.
Meanwhile, FIFA has also introduced another disciplinary adjustment for the finals, with single yellow cards to be wiped after the group stage and again after the quarter-finals, reducing the risk of players missing crucial knockout matches because of accumulated bookings.
