Sekhukhune United captain Linda Mntambo has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37.

The veteran midfielder, affectionately known as ‘Figo’, has decided to hang up his boots following a lengthy and frustrating battle with recurring injuries that limited his game time in recent seasons.

Mntambo, who enjoyed prominent and highly successful spells with Orlando Pirates, Chippa United, and Jomo Cosmos, leaves a lasting legacy in South African football as both an exemplary leader and a consummate professional.

Mntambo joined Babina Noko in 2022 and managed to feature in 59 games, scored 13 goals, and contributed eight assists. During his stay at the Limpopo club, he took on the captain’s armband and leading Sekhukhune with distinction both on and off the field.

Confirming the news in an emotional video clip surrounded by his family, the Babina Noko skipper expressed gratitude for a journey that exceeded his wildest childhood dreams.

“I never thought this day would come so soon. Growing up as a young boy in Ezimhlophe, I’ve always wanted to turn professional, and having lived that dream since 2013 has been a journey worth celebrating,” said an emotional Mntambo.

The midfield maestro opened up about the personal sacrifices that came with the demands of top-flight football, particularly the time spent away from his loved ones.

“The biggest sacrifice I’ve had to make for my career is building a family and knowing that I will not be fully present dealing with my kids,” he shared.

“I hope my kids will again look back at the career I’ve had and be proud of what Dad had to go through. Of what Dad built for the family.

“They say good dancers know when to leave the stage. As tough as it is, I’m going to miss the game, but I’ll never be lost to it. Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from football. Officially hanging my boots. People would not know me today if it wasn’t for football.”

LINDA MNTAMBO’S REMARKABLE JOURNEY IN SA FOOTBALL

Mntambo’s rise from the amateur ranks to the pinnacle of South African football remains an inspirational tale. He burst onto the professional scene with Cosmos before securing a move to the Chilli Boys, where his stellar performances in the middle of the park quickly caught the eye of the country’s elite sides.

He subsequently earned a dream move to Soweto giants, Pirates, where he lifted silverware and became a fan favourite due to his work rate, technical ability, and infectious personality.

While injuries forced his decision to step away from playing, ‘Figo’ retires with his head held high, leaving a void that will be difficult to fill in the Babina Noko change room.
