Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit Cape Town City FC has parted ways with head coach Jan Vreman after failing to secure promotion to the Betway Premiership for the upcoming season.
The Cape side fell completely out of contention in the ongoing PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoffs, leaving top-flight dropouts Magesi FC and NFD challengers Milford FC to battle it out for the final remaining spot in the elite league.
During the just-concluded 2025/26 Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign, Kruger United secured automatic promotion to South Africa’s top flight by winning the league. Cape Town City and Milford finished second and third, respectively, booking their places in the gruelling playoffs alongside Magesi, who finished 15th in the Betway Premiership.
While Magesi and Milford have given a solid account of themselves in the mini-tournament so far, Vreman’s charges endured a dismal start, suffering defeats in their opening two matches.
The poor run officially mathematically eliminated the Cape side from topping the playoff table. As it stands, Cape Town City are stuck on four points with their campaign wrapped up. Magesi are also tied on four points, while high-flying Milford currently leads the log standings with six points ahead of the decisive final fixtures.
Following the heartbreak of missing out on top-flight promotion, the club’s management has taken swift action, cutting ties with the Dutch tactician.
JAN VREMAN SPENT ONE SEASON WITH CAPE TOWN CITY

The Dutch mentor took over the coaching job in July 2025 to guide the club in its promotion ambitions after it suffered relegation to the second division at the end of the 2024/25 season. After the disappointing run in the playoffs that saw City miss out on the playoffs, the John Comitis-owned club pulled the trigger on Vreman, who spent only one season with the team.
CT City announced the decision to go its separate ways with the 60-year-old coach on Friday morning, thanking him for his commitment throughout the 2025/26 campaign.
“The club would like to extend its sincere thanks and appreciation to Jan Vreman, who will depart his role as Head Coach at the end of the 25/26 season,” Cape Town City said on its social media platforms.
“Jan took charge during an important and difficult period for the club and led the team with great professionalism and dedication. Under his guidance, we finished second in the league, narrowly missing out on a magical immediate repromotion.
“Although we did not quite get over the line, Jan’s commitment to the club, the players and the project was clear throughout. His selfless work, leadership, and humility have revived the club – setting us once again in the right direction for the future.
“The club would like to thank Jan sincerely for his efforts and contribution, and we wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”
