How many matches will Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane miss after red cards?

MEXICO CITY: Bafana Bafana’s duo of Themba Zwane and Sphephelo Sithole were both sent off in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Mexico as the national team suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

Sithole and Zwane were shown straight red cards at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and will have to serve a suspension.

Bafana coach Hugo Broos reacted to the two red cards after the match. He said: “It’s not nice for both players to get a red card in an opening game of the World Cup. The first one, we must accept. The player was going in on goal, and Yaya fouled him. But the second, the Mexican player blocked [Zwane]. It was a bit soft for a red card.”

Under FIFA regulations, both players will automatically serve a one-match suspension. As a result, Sithole and Zwane will be unavailable for Bafana Bafana’s second Group A clash against the Czech Republic.

South Africa will face Czechia at Atlanta Stadium in the United States on 18 June, knowing that a positive result could significantly boost their chances of progressing to the knockout stages. Bafana will be aiming to collect maximum points and strengthen their position in the race to emerge from the group.

However, barring any further disciplinary action from FIFA, both players will be eligible to return for the final group-stage clash. The tie will be against South Korea.

FIFA’s disciplinary rules state that a player who receives a straight red card is suspended for the team’s next match. Additional sanctions are only imposed if the offence is deemed particularly serious by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee. The same one-match suspension applies when a player is sent off for receiving two yellow cards in the same game.

WHAT HAPPENS TO SUSPENSIONS AFTER THE FIFA WORLD CUP KNOCKOUT STAGES?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup features an updated disciplinary system. It is designed to prevent yellow-card suspensions from carrying too far into the tournament.

A player who accumulates two yellow cards in separate matches will still serve a one-match suspension. However, FIFA has introduced a yellow-card amnesty at the end of the group stage.

This means any yellow cards picked up during the group phase are wiped clean once a team qualifies for the Round of 32.

For example, if Teboho Mokoena, who was booked against Mexico, receives another yellow card against the Czech Republic, he would be suspended for the South Korea match. This is because he would have accumulated two cautions.

However, if the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder receives only one yellow card during the group stage and South Africa progresses, that caution will be wiped out before the knockout rounds begin.

FIFA has also introduced a second amnesty after the quarterfinals. Any yellow cards accumulated during the Round of 32, Round of 16 and quarterfinals are cancelled before the semi-finals. The rule ensures that players cannot miss a World Cup final solely due to yellow-card accumulation.

However, red cards are different. Unlike yellow cards, they do not disappear through the amnesty system. A player sent off receives an automatic suspension for the next match and may face additional punishment depending on the severity of the incident.
