Bafana Bafana dynamic attacker Relebohile Mofokeng has reflected on his dream FIFA World Cup debut, while expressing deep gratitude for the overwhelming love he continues to receive from South African football fans.

The Orlando Pirates sensation was introduced as a second-half substitute, replacing Jayden Adams, as Hugo Broos’ men fought back to secure a thrilling 1-1 draw against Czechia at the Atlanta Stadium on Thursday.

The 21-year-old was an unused substitute during South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the tournament at the Estadio Azteca.

Remarkably, having only made his professional breakthrough three years ago, the highly-rated youngster has rapidly transitioned from domestic prospect to competing on football’s grandest global stage.

Speaking in the mixed zone with journalists in Atlanta after the 2026 World Cup Group A match, Mofokeng could not hide his pride at donning the national colours at a World Cup.

“I have always wanted to play for the country and to give everything,” a proud Mofokeng stated. “So I will always do my best, and if my country is happy, I am also happy. I am proud of myself. We came here to compete; we are doing very well, and we want to give our all.”

The tricky playmaker, affectionately known as ‘President ya ma2K’ back home in South Africa, also acknowledged the immense backing he receives from the passionate Bafana faithful.

“It means a lot because when someone expects something from you, you get motivated to do more and give them what they want,” he explained. “So I think it gives me confidence, and I am doing it for them.”

HOW THE PIRATES STAR EMBRACES TEAM SUPPORT

Beyond the fans, the youngster highlighted the incredible brotherhood within the national team camp that eased his nerves before stepping onto the pitch.

“Obviously, as teammates, we speak, laugh, and we enjoy the moment. So the most important thing is to enjoy the moment,” Mofokeng added.

“When I came on, it was my debut, so they were happy for me. When they also come in, I will be happy for them. We must just be happy for each other and encourage each other.”
