Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko has reflected on his FIFA World Cup debut, while expressing his gratitude for the overwhelming support the team received in Atlanta.
Maseko earned his first start of the tournament during South Africa’s hard-fought 1-1 draw against Czechia in the Group A tie at the Atlanta Stadium on Thursday. The 22-year-old put in an impressive 85-minute shift before being replaced by Orlando Pirates’ versatile utility player, Kamogelo Sebelebele.
Bafana found their breakthrough with nine minutes remaining when Maseko’s powerful effort struck the arm of the unfortunate Pavel Šulc inside the penalty area. With the referee pointing directly to the spot and the hopes of a nation resting on his shoulders, Teboho Mokoena coolly stepped up to convert the spot-kick.
The draw has breathed life into South Africa’s qualification ambitions. After suffering a defeat to Mexico in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup, Hugo Broos’ men now face a must-win clash against South Korea in their final Group match to secure a spot in the Round of 32.
WHAT THAPELO MASEKO MAKES OF HIS FIFA WORLD CUP DEBUT

The Mamelodi Sundowns attacker, who spent the past season on loan at Greek Cypriot outfit AEL Limassol, admitted that while he expects more from his personal display, making his bow on football’s grandest stage was an unforgettable milestone.
“I am not entirely happy with the performance, but it was decent,” Maseko told journalists. “However, it’s a very special feeling and a truly significant moment for me personally. I am incredibly grateful and thankful for this opportunity.
“I think we were so unfortunate today [Thursday]. We created two or three clear chances that we just couldn’t capitalise on. I think we just need luck to be on our side so we can start turning these performances into wins.”
Hugo Broos’ troops enjoyed massive backing at the Atlanta Stadium, with both travelling South Africans and locals rallying behind the team. Maseko admitted the squad was taken aback by the sheer volume of the support in the United States.

“It’s incredible. We saw so many supporters waving South African flags in the stands,” Maseko added. It was special, and we were honestly surprised to see that much support so far from home. We appreciate every single one of them. They spent their time and their hard-earned money to be there.
“We know the tickets are very expensive, but they still came out in numbers to watch and support us. From the bottom of our hearts, we are deeply grateful.”
