Hugo Broos ranks Bafana Bafana’s World Cup milestone alongside Cameroon AFCON triumph

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos on the touchline

Bafana Bafana boss Hugo Broos has explained why South Africa’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup exploit ranks as a crowning achievement in his storied career, matching his 2017 AFCON gold with Cameroon.

The Belgian tactician guided the Indomitable Lions to continental glory in Gabon nine years ago. Now, having masterminded Bafana’s first-ever progression into the knockout stages of a World Cup, Broos believes the magnitude of the achievement carries the exact same weight.

South Africa’s memorable global campaign came to an end on Sunday, 28 June, following a 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32 at the Los Angeles Stadium. Despite the heartbreaking exit, Broos’ troops defied expectations in Group A that featured co-hosts Mexico, Czech Republic, and South Korea.

Bafana Bafana rallied back from an opening-day 2-0 defeat against Mexico on June 11 to secure a crucial 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic, before sealing their historic knockout berth with a 1-0 victory over South Korea on June 25.

As a result, South Africa progressed to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history.

BROOS SLAMS EARLY CRITICS, WHILE COMPARING BAFANA BAFANA’S WORLD CUP PERFORMANCE TO CAMEROON’S AFCON VICTORY

Speaking to the media following Bafana Bafana’s elimination, an emotional but proud Hugo Broos did not hold back. The veteran Belgian fired back at the heavy criticism his side faced after their opening-match defeat in Mexico City, boldly equating South Africa’s ground-breaking World Cup campaign to his legendary 2017 AFCON triumph with Cameroon.

“I think I can compare it to winning the AFCON with Cameroon,” Broos stated. “This is an unbelievable performance that they [Bafana] have delivered during this World Cup.

“I was a little bit angry at how we were criticised after the game against Mexico. What do people think? We came here, and in the opening game, we were going to win against Mexico?”

The 74-year-old mentor acknowledged that the team still has a lot to work on. “I know my team, and I know that there’s still a lot of work to be done if we want to achieve more at this level. So, again for me, what we did here [in North America] during the last three to four weeks I can compare to the level of winning the AFCON with Cameroon,” the Bafana mentor added.

Broos and his boys will return home with their heads held high, having laid a solid foundation for the future of South African football on the world stage.
