Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United have announced the contract extension for veteran defender Daniel Cardoso ahead of the new 2026/27 season.
Widely reported to have left Babina Noko following the expiry of his contract in June, Daniel Cardoso has put those rumours to rest. In a statement issued on Monday, the club confirmed that the 37-year-old has signed a new one-year deal to extend his stay.
The veteran centre-back, who has spent the last four seasons at Sekhukhune, has been a pivotal figure and a key leader, often donning the captain’s armband. While initial exit talks coincided with goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner’s departure to Kaizer Chiefs, the defender is now officially locked in for the upcoming campaign.
He is one of the familiar faces staying behind amidst a massive squad overhaul. So far in the current transfer window, the Limpopo-based outfit has cut ties with Lesiba Nku, Lebogang Phiri, Ronaldo Maarman, Siphiwe Mahlangu, and Samkele Sihlali.
These departures follow a massive clear-out initiated last month, where Sekhukhune parted ways with several high-profile veterans and squad players, including Bradley Grobler, Thabang Monare, Sikhosonke Langa, Katlego Mohamme, Ryan Baartman, and Rivaldo Coetzee. Among the latest to exit, Maarman and Mahlangu returned to the club only to secure their permanent departures. The duo spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Durban City FC, where they enjoyed a historic stint, helping the KwaZulu-Natal side lift the 2026 Nedbank Cup title.
SEKHUKHUNE UNITED CONFIRM THE CONTRACT EXTENSION OF VETERAN DEFENDER

“Sekhukhune United Football Club is delighted to announce that veteran defender Daniel Cardoso has extended his contract with the Club,” the club said in a statement on Monday evening.
“Since joining Babina Noko in the 2022/23 season, Cardoso has been a pillar of leadership, professionalism and consistency, making a significant contribution both on and off the field.
“His experience, commitment and winning mentality continue to play an important role within the squad.”
Sekhukhune will be looking to improve on their performances during the past campaign, where they missed out on a top-three finish and a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup. The club finished fifth with 44 points.
The club has also roped in former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze. He will be assisted by Papi Zothwane, who spent the past season as co-coach at Richards Bay FC
