Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie has weighed in on the club’s latest acquisition, explaining what the arrival of former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou means for the Cape Winelands outfit.
The club confirmed the signing of the talented attacking midfielder on Tuesday morning following his exit from Amakhosi.
The 28-year-old moves to the Western Cape as a free agent, penning a long-term contract with the Maroon side.
Matlou recently cut ties with the Soweto giants at the end of June 2026 when his contract reached its expiration, concluding a four-season spell at Naturena. He originally arrived at the Glamour Boys in July 2022 on a free transfer after leaving the now-defunct Moroka Swallows.
During his time with Amakhosi, the midfielder registered over 46 appearances across all competitions, providing three assists and picking up a Nedbank Cup winner’s medal along the way.

In an official club statement detailing the arrival of Matlou, the ‘Maroons’ welcomed the midfielder with open arms.
“Stellenbosch Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of midfielder George Matlou on a free transfer,” the club stated.
“Matlou, who most recently plied his trade with Kaizer Chiefs, has penned a long-term contract with Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2026/27 season.
“The 28-year-old made 46 appearances and won the Nedbank Cup during his time at Naturena, and previously enjoyed stints with the likes of Moroka Swallows and Portuguese side Sanjoanense.”

Following the official announcement of Matlou, Benadie touched on the player’s pedigree and understanding of the game, expressing his delight that the midfielder chose to join the Winelands outfit.
“George is a player we believe can add real value to our squad through his experience, technical ability, and understanding of the game,” said the club’s CEO, Benadie.
“His pedigree speaks for itself, and we are naturally pleased that he has chosen to continue his career with Stellenbosch FC. We believe he can play an important role in helping us achieve our objectives this season.”
Matlou will look to hit the ground running under Gavin Hunt as Stellies eye a strong competitive push in the Betway Premiership and knockout competitions in the new 2026/27 campaign.
