Kaizer Chiefs DStv Diski Challenge defender Gopolang Taunyana is currently at Stellenbosch FC, undergoing assessment, FARPost has established. The highly rated 20-year-old centre-back is hoping to impress Gavin Hunt and secure a move to the Cape Winelands outfit.
Stellenbosch’s interest in Taunyana comes amid a major squad overhaul at the club. Hunt has moved on at least 14 players ahead of his first full season in charge. The veteran mentor joined the club in December 2024 following Steve Barker’s departure.
The former SuperSport United coach has sanctioned the exits of Oscarine Masuluke, veteran full-back Wayde Jooste and long-serving goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt.
The central defensive trio of Thabo Moloisane, Athenkosi Mcaba and Olisa Ndah have also parted ways with the club. Dejean Ah Shene, Kazie Enyinnaya, Khomotjo Lekoloane, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Kobamelo Kodisang and Asekho Tiwani have all moved on following the expiration of loans or transfers. Kyle Jurgens has since joined Durban City, while Omega Mdaka has signed for AmaZulu FC.
Hunt has welcomed Thabiso Lebitso from Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs’ George Matlou and midfielder Sinoxolo Kwayiba on permanent deals. The Winelands club have also signed Terrence Mashego on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns and completed the permanent signing of goalkeeper Nathan Garrow from New Zealand side Auckland City.

Standing tall and comfortable on the ball, Taunyana has been praised for his composure and ability to initiate attacks from deep. While he is still developing physically, insiders insist he is far from easy to bully and possesses an aggressive edge in the tackle.
“He is one for the future,” a source familiar with the player’s development told FARPost. “He’s very vocal, organises his teammates well and has all the attributes to become a top centre-back. He’s strong in one-on-one situations and doesn’t shy away from a challenge.”
TAUNYANA: FROM REFEREE TO AFRICAN CHAMPION
Hailing from Klipgat in the North West, Taunyana has mapped out one of the most remarkable journeys in South African youth football. Just a few years ago, the former Parktown Boys’ High School student was officiating matches under the Randburg Central Local Football Association. He even walked away with the Referee of the Tournament award at the 2022 Gauteng Engen Knockout Challenge.
In a stunning turn of events, Taunyana traded the whistle for the boots. Just two years later, in 2024, he was crowned Defender of the Tournament. This was after he helped the Kaizer Chiefs U-18 squad clinch the very same Engen Knockout title.
After being snapped up by Amakhosi, his stock rose rapidly. In 2025, the rising star enjoyed a stellar year. He won the DDC title with Chiefs and played a key role as Amajita were crowned African champions.
He now finds himself on the brink of making the transition to professional football. And it will be at a club that has built a solid reputation for identifying and developing young talent.
