Siwelele FC are eyeing Casric Stars goalkeeper Wandile Mthombeni, who is remembered for stunning Orlando Pirates in last season’s Nedbank Cup, FARPost has learnt. Mthombeni emerged as one of the standout performers during Casric’s memorable Nedbank Cup run.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper played a huge role as the Motsepe Foundation Championship side eliminated Orlando Pirates in the Last 16. The former midfielder-turned-goalkeeper produced a string of crucial saves over 120 minutes before Casric prevailed 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout. He followed that up with another assured display as Casric defeated AmaZulu FC 2-1 after extra time to book a place in the semi-finals.
Although Casric’s fairy-tale journey eventually came to an end with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Durban City, Mthombeni’s performances did not go unnoticed, attracting interest from several top-flight clubs.
Now, Siwelele appear to be edging closer to securing his signature. The son of Casric chairman and coach Bucs Mthombeni is currently undergoing an assessment with the Bloemfontein outfit ahead of the new season.
FARPost understands that the 26-year-old has impressed during his assessment with the club, increasing the likelihood of a move away from his father’s team. However, he remains under contract with Casric Stars, meaning the two clubs would need to reach an agreement before any transfer can be finalised.
WANDILE MTHOMBENI LEAVING THE FAMILY-RUN ENVIRONMENT?
A move to Bloemfontein could prove to be an important step in his career, offering him the opportunity to play top-flight football. It would also see him leave the family-run environment that has shaped much of his football journey.
Comfortable with the ball at his feet and renowned for his commanding presence between the posts, Mthombeni has all the attributes of a modern goalkeeper. His performances last season suggested he is ready for the next chapter, and Siwelele could provide the ideal platform.
The club recently signed Botswana international goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko, who is still expected to adapt to South African football. Ricardo Goss returned to Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of his loan spell. Although there remains a possibility he could return for another stint, the club still need to secure a third goalkeeper capable of competing at that level.
They also have Samukelo Xulu, who was linked with a move away from the club at the start of the transfer window. That means Mthombeni’s chances of joining Siwelele appear to be strong.
SIWELELE FC’S BUSY TRANSFER WINDOW
Siwelele have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market, overseeing a major squad overhaul ahead of the new season. At least 23 players have departed during the current transfer window.
Among the notable exits are Under-20 AFCON-winning trio Thabang Mahlangu, Lazola Maku and Neo Rapoo. Rapoo has joined Orlando Pirates, along with forward Ghampani Lungu and highly rated youngster Bohlale Ngwato.
Pogiso Sanoka, Kgaogelo Sekgota, Enoch Quaicoe, Gape Moralo, Keanin Ayer and Lyle Lakay have also left the club, while loanees Happy Mashiane and Samkelo Zwane will not return to coach Lehlohonolo Seema’s squad.
Former Bafana Bafana defender Buhle Mkhwanazi, Lyle Lakay, Samir Nurkovic, Kgaogelo Sekgota and Nyiko Mobbie also moved on. Siwelele have, however, been active in strengthening the squad.
The club has secured the services of Orlando Pirates duo Thabiso Sesane and Selaelo Rasebotja, while Jaisen Clifford has arrived from Marumo Gallants. Ghanaian striker Hamza Issah is also part of their new look squad.
After finishing 10th in the Premiership last season, Siwelele have further bolstered their ranks by signing Kwanda Lupalule, Felix Noge and Rehloholofaditswe Thulo from Mangaung United.
